On the Fourth of July (the blog is a little behind) we left Redwoods and headed north on 101 up the Oregon coast. This was a reprieve from our vigorous hiking and the hot weather.

We spent two nights at Humbug Mountain State Park, which was a great park that had very easy access to the beach. To celebrate the 4th we picked up some fresh Rockfish (as well as cupcakes and beer) and made a good dinner. Our first holiday away from home was a little bittersweet, but we had a good time.

Following Humbug we spent a day driving up the coast, stopping at some roadside spots such as natural arches and an area call Devil’s Churn. Here we were lucky enough to spot a couple gray whales, which we watched for almost an hour as they dove and then resurfaced just off a sandbar.

After one more night on the Northern coast, we drove to Salem to see my cousin Alex, his wife Alayna, their kids, as well as my aunt Sarah who was also visiting! Huge thank you to them for their hospitality for a couple days. The temperatures were topping 100°, so we stayed close to the house. Clean and refreshed, we made our way into Washington, our last state on the US leg of the trip.
