Banff AB, Canada

Author: Molly (shout out to David, who suggested we write the post author at the top so it can be read in the correct voice 🙂 )

Admittedly, this post became a bit delayed since we spent the last week at home seeing friends and family. But better late than never!

After 2 months of sunny weather, our luck finally broke during our last week in Canada. We set up camp at Takakkaw Falls, which is a walk-in campground with a parking lot 1/8 mile away. After setting up we, left to see a nearby lake. Upon returning, Jon-David went to the site to drop things off while I dug things out of the car. I met him halfway back to the site looking quite miserable. Apparently, a storm had ripped through at elevation and significantly damaged and flooded our tent.

Luckily, we had our backpacking tent – although we did find out that leaks. The next few days were a near constant downpour, although a slight break allowed us to dry our things on the Mazda. The lightning impeded our hiking plans, and we ended up leaving the campground a day early to find a spot where at least the car was closer to our tent.

Cooking shelters at the campgrounds helped with the rain

Bad weather is always an issue in mountains, but the timing of this after two months of camping admittedly reduced our energy. Luckily, the rain stopped and we had a nice last few days of hiking, in the Banff area. We were even able to get last minute bus passes to Moraine Lake, which is not accessible by private car.

Our last week we also celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary with a carrot cake and a hike, and Jon-David’s birthday.

We were pretty physically tired as our day to drive home got closer. I anticipated that we would not want to backpack for two nights, and switched our itinerary. This was a good move, as the rain picked back up and we were very ready for a roof and a bathroom of our own.

The last pack up – note the very wet footprints on the ground. Border patrol chose not to dig through our wet clothes

Our drive home was mostly through a torrential downpour, but the good news is that us and the Mazda all made it home – with maybe a few scratches.

It’s amazing to look back on pictures from over the summer and see everything we were able to do. While we have been inspired to add new places to our future travel list, it has certainly made us appreciative of our home.

As I write this, I’m sitting in the DC airport getting ready to fly to London to start the next leg. We are both feeling a little sad and nervous but also excited!
