Hopping between major cities made us eager to head back into the woods for a while, so we were excited to go to Slovenia. It felt like as soon as the train crossed the border we were in the hills and woods. This is a picture heavy post because Slovenia was beautiful.

Ljubljana is the capital city, but it’s quite small compared to some of our recent stops. We spent two nights and enjoyed exploring the river walk, parks, and a castle overlooking town.
Our next stop was Lesce, which is a small town near the entrance of a valley in the Julian Alps. We stayed at a great hostel, probably our favorite so far because it had a nice kitchen and everyone was incredibly friendly.
Our plan was to stay three nights before leaving for Croatia, but when we saw the weather was supposed to be nicer in the coming days we decided to cancel our Croatia nights and stay longer. We ended up spending 7 nights, our longest stay anywhere so far.

I still dragged Jon-David out into the rain for some easy hikes the first couple days into the hills overlooking Lake Bled and along Mostnica gorge.

Once the weather cleared up we did a beautiful valley hike past a waterfall as well as up Golica peak, which is along a narrow ridge that runs the border between Slovenia and Austria. These were both stunning, especially because it was perfect fall color season.

We’re missing home frequently, so it was good timing to take some time in one spot, cook some food, and enjoy the fall colors. We met a lot of interesting people at the hostel, many of whom are doing extended travel like us. It was great to swap stories and get advice about upcoming destinations.

This ended up being one of my favorite places so far. Slovenia will absolutely be a country we return to, especially slightly earlier in the season when we can do some mountain hut hikes.
