Singapore

Our flight from Thailand to Australia had a layover in Singapore, so we decided to spend the night to check out the city. Our first stop was the airport, which is a destination in itself. Singapore’s airport is ranked the best in the world. It has tons of free attractions such as a butterfly garden, cactus garden and huge mall called the Jewel.

We made it to our hotel via Singapore’s very nice metro. We decided it was way too hot so we took a mid day nap before walking to the Gardens by the Bay. The Gardens by the Bay is a huge park with several botanical gardens and the famous Super Tree Grove. Right after the sun set we caught a Super Tree light show.

The light show was set to Beethoven’s music which we could appreciate more after our visit to Vienna.

Singapore was a strategic colony for the British Empire along the trade route from China to Great Britain. This influence makes Singapore feel very westernized. All the signs are in English so navigating is very easy. There is also a large Chinese population and a Chinatown area where we grabbed dinner after the light show.

Singapore is not a destination we typically would have sought out since it’s mostly a large city, but I’m glad we had the opportunity to learn about another new country.
