Wilson’s Promontory, VIC Australia

We set off on our three day coastal road trip from the Blue Mountains south towards Wilson’s Promontory National Park. At this point we had been in Australia for almost two weeks and had seen a bunch of wildlife but were yet to see a kangaroo. So after spending the night in Nowra we stopped at Pebble Beach in Murramarang National Park, where we hear you can see “heaps” of kangaroos.

Pebble Beach didn’t disappoint. There must have been 50 lazy kangaroos that you could just about walk up to and pet.
Camel Rock Beach
We stopped at Camel Rock Beach along our way down the coast. The water was crystal clear.

We stopped in the former whaling town of Eden for the night. When in Cairns, our boat captain recommended we stop to get some fish and chips along the coast, so we obliged. We bought a couples platter with barramundi, calamari and potato pancakes from a small fish ‘n’ chips shop then headed to an ocean lookout to enjoy our meal. This honestly was the best fried fish Molly and I have ever had and the pieces of barramundi were huge! After, we explored some tide pools where we found lots of crabs, puffer fish and sea slugs.

Our fish ‘n’ chips basket must have weighed two pounds.

We explored the tied pools in the town of Eden after a thunderstorm passed through.

I was on a mission to find a wombat and lucky for me Wilson’s Promontory is apparently the best place to see them. Wombats are little muscular tanks that burrow in dens and when the sun goes down they graze on grass next to the kangaroos. After we settled into our little bunk house, we headed to a wildlife trail to try and find a wombat at sunset. At first we saw lots of kangaroos, emus, parrots, but no wombats. But then, right after the sun was set we saw a wombat come out of the treeline and it crossed the trail right in front of us! Then we started seeing them all over the place including a mom and baby right in front of our cabin!

Emu on our nature walk
We saw a half dozen emus on our nature walk. They are so big and kind of scary!

Wombats are closely related to Koalas, but unlike Koalas their pouches open towards the rear! This way the joeys don’t get a face full of dirt when Mom is digging.

We spent the next day in Wilson’s Prom hiking the coast and rainforest. In the evening we went back to say hi to the wombats on the wildlife trail. The next stop on our Australian road trip was Great Otway National Park where there is a healthy population of koalas!
